Year 6 Leaders of Tomorrow Programme

At St. Mary’s Catholic Primary School, we are dedicated to nurturing the leaders of tomorrow. Our Year 6 leadership programme is designed to empower students by developing vital skills that enable them to take charge of their lives and inspire positive change in the world around them. Leadership instils confidence, promotes creative problem-solving, encourages teamwork, and fosters collaboration, all while giving students the opportunity to embrace responsibility.

While some may debate whether leadership is innate or learned, we believe that every child has the potential to grow and develop into a confident leader. Leadership development is a lifelong process, and as supportive adults both at home and school, we play an essential role in equipping students with the skills they need to step into leadership roles now and in the future.

Our Year 6 students have access to a variety of responsibilities and experiences that are tailored to cultivate their leadership potential:

Class Roles and Responsibilities:

Each Year 6 pupil applies for a specific position within the class, learning the valuable skill of crafting formal letters to express interest in their desired roles. Positions include assembly monitor, community monitor, librarian, computing monitor, sports leader, and playground monitor. This process teaches students how to reflect on their strengths and articulate how their unique qualities make them suited to each role, promoting self-awareness and responsibility.

Young Enterprise – Fiver Challenge:

Through the Young Enterprise Fiver Challenge, students are given £5 to kick-start a small business. This exciting initiative introduces them to the world of entrepreneurship, providing hands-on experience as they research, create, plan, and run their own enterprise. Over the course of four weeks, students develop business strategies and compete in challenges, with the opportunity to win prizes and showcase their creations in our Fiver Showcase. This challenge sharpens their problem-solving, financial literacy, and teamwork skills.

Sky Studios Visit:

As part of our commitment to offering real-world experiences, our Year 6 students take a trip to Sky Studios, where they produce a news segment podcast focused on wellbeing. This engaging experience allows them to learn various media production skills, including scripting, editing, camera operation, and presenting. The final production is shared during Wellbeing Week assemblies, allowing students to see their hard work and creativity come to life while fostering teamwork and communication.

Student-Led Assemblies:

Our Year 6 students are also responsible for leading themed assemblies throughout the year. They plan and deliver these assemblies, allowing them to build their public speaking and organisational skills, while boosting their confidence and ability to communicate effectively in front of an audience.

Houses of Parliament Tour:

To deepen their understanding of leadership and governance, Year 6 students visit the Houses of Parliament for a guided tour and interactive workshop. This enriching experience gives students an inside look at how laws are made and the workings of Parliament, sparking their interest in civic responsibility and the democratic process.

Heathrow Young Explorers Challenge:

Heathrow Young Explorers is a challenge delivered to Year 6 pupils attending primary schools local to the airport. With support from Heathrow volunteers, pupils use 3D modelling software to design a transport solution to make travel to and through the airport even more sustainable. Pupils are introduced to the Skills Builder essential skills and a diverse range of careers at the airport to help bring Heathrow to life. After learning about the airport, pupils work in teams to design a sustainable transport solution and use their oracy skills to present to the class and Heathrow volunteers. At the end of the session, feedback is given by the Heathrow team and winners are announced.

With these engaging and diverse opportunities, our Year 6 Leaders of Tomorrow Programme equips students with the essential skills they need to lead with confidence, creativity, and integrity in the years ahead. We are proud to support their journey as they become the leaders our world needs.
