St Mary’s School’s Sport Vision Statement
“At St Mary’s we want children to grow in skills, confidence and enjoyment of physical education and sport. P.E and Sport is a wonderful way to build the life-skills of learning, teamwork, discipline, commitment and achievement and we embrace this at St Mary’s.”
St Mary’s values the impact of high quality Physical Education and Sport for its’ pupils.
- 2 hours of curriculum time physical education teaching takes place each week.
- In addition school offers low cost, quality sports classes before and after school: Hi5 Netball, Gymnastics, Multi-skills & Football
- In preparation for competitions additional practice sessions are held such as running, kwik-hockey, dance and kwik-cricket.
We are delighted that St Marys has achieved the Gold Sainsbury’s School Games Mark for last year 2017-18 as recognition of our commitment, engagement and delivery of competitive school sport.
We aim to invite all KS2 pupils to represent St Mary’s in sport at least once in each school year. St Mary’s competes in all the local Chiswick Schools Cluster competitions and the Borough wide events. On many occasions as winners of both we have gone on to represent Hounslow Borough in the London School Games and Mini Youth Games at Crystal Palace. Participation in any Sports event is celebrated in our School Assemblies on a weekly basis and a sports report is available on the school website (link please).
We also have children registered as more able in sport, a Change for Life club and a Young Leaders programme. Our Playground Buddies play with younger pupils to help them settle in.
Sport Premium Overview
At St Mary’s School we believe PE & Sport plays an important role in making our vision statement a reality for every pupil, with the potential to change young people’s lives for the better.
Through PE & Sport our children learn to develop the important qualities of discipline, resilience, communication, team work, and ambition, leading to improved concentration, attitude, and academic achievement.
We have welcomed the Government’s announcement to provide additional funding until 2020 to improve provision of physical education (PE) and sport in primary schools. We are committed to using this resource in developing high quality PE lessons, alongside greater opportunities for sporting competitions and clubs for all our young people.
What does the Sport Premium mean for my School?
‘Schools must spend the additional funding on improving their provision of PE and sport, but they will have the freedom to choose how they do this’ (DfE June 2013).
We are working closely with PSD and have identified key areas through a self-review process to ensure we can meets the high expectations in PE and Sport for our children.
In 2017/18 we continued with additional provision for gymnastics and added additional swimming lessons to enable KS2 pupils to achieve a first qualification in swimming.
Through our Sport Premium we also offer our Pupil Premium Grant (PPG) children the chance to take part in a number of extra PE sessions free of charge both inside and outside of school time.
